"When one thinks of Texas the last thing that comes to mind is metal, let alone extreme death/grind metal. However you would be surprised at the extreme metal scene in Texas, there are a lot of quality bands that come from Texas (Devourment, Gored, Putrilage, etc.). However not all bands from this state get as much recognition as they truly deserve, and Mortifix are one of those bands. Formed in Dallas, Texas in 1991 Mortifix consisted of Shawn Cooley (vocals), Tom Brewer (drums), Ronnie Sterling (guitars), Steve Simpson (guitars), and Allen Culmo (bass). The band released a number of demos in addition to this their only full-length album, but unfortunately split-up not long afterwards. The reason for the split has been blamed on a poor contract deal and lack of promotion, which is entirely possible since not many people seem to know of this great band and to me that’s a shame.
Reborn Through Hatred is one ass kicker of an album, full of heavy riffing, a full bass sound, and really good drumming. Drummer Tom Brewer doesn’t aimlessly blast/pound away at the drums like some death metal drummers, instead he gives you a nice dose of double bass coupled with blast beats now and then. Sterling and Simpson supply the excellent riffs on here, many of which can get stuck in your head, while Culmo rounds out the rhythm section. Shawn Cooley’s vocals are a mid-ranged growled mixed with some shouted vocals every now and then. But for the most part Mr. Cooley sticks with his death growl, which is a good thing. The lyrics on this album range in subject matter, from being just brutal (I Am Brutality), destruction/chaos (Visions of Chaos), and metal pride/pride in death metal (Dominion).
Instead of going through a track by track analysis, I will simply mention a little bit about a few of my favorite tracks. The opening track of this album is entitled I Am Brutality, and it wastes no time in getting things started. Right from the start you’re assaulted by pounding drums, fast guitar riffs, and Cooley’s growled vocals. This particular song deals with being plain and simply brutal, and controlling over someone’s life. One of the best lines is where Cooley growls “Your soul I possess/simply possess/no less,” just the way he delivers those lines is nothing short of killer. Another one of my favorite songs, if not the absolute favorite one, is Anger and Hate. Unlike the opening track, this song starts out a little bit slower with Simpson and Sterling providing slow yet heavy riffs. I can’t seem to get enough of this song when listening to this CD, the vocals are intense and the lyrics really well written in my opinion. The highlight of the song is where Cooley delivers the lines: “Killing you/I’m filling you/with anger and hate.” The sound of his vocals when he delivers those lines leaves no doubt that he could fuck you up if he wanted to.
The rest of the album follows in the same manner as the songs mentioned, with some slower tempo songs followed by faster paced tracks. Each song is filled with great guitar riffs, heavy bass, excellent drumming, and the growled vocals of Shawn Cooley. This band needs to be heard by anyone who likes death metal, they’re too good of a band not to get recognized. While this album is hard to come by I’d suggest anyone pick it up if they find it used somewhere, or have a friend burn you a copy if needs be. You simply have to hear this band, they are one of the best death metal bands to come from Texas in my honest opinion."

"The Last Rites, born in 1997, are a Thrash-Death Metal band from Savona; at the beginning formed by 5 members, after 10 years of activity, reduced to 3: Dave (voice and guitar), Libu (bass guitar) and Laccio (drums).
In 2001 they recorded at Nadir Study of Tommy Talamanca (Sadist) the homonym demo; a few months later they record the song, "Psycho Killer" that will be included in "Nadir Compilation", understanding the best of the productions of the homonym Study. Always in 2001 the band wins the "Almost Famous Competion". Their real debut arrives in 2003 with the album "Mind Prison", that is distributed by the Dutch label Two Fat Men in Europe, receiving good critiques on the press of sector. In 2004 I/you/they have been selected among the 10 Thrash Metal more promising band of the Italian panorama from the magazine Metal Hammer. In 2006 the mini-cd goes out "Hate", distributed by the Akom Prod. / Cool Blood Records. In 2007 their song "Equilibrium" is included in the "Liguria In Metal Compilation", the best groups metal underground in Liguria, selected by the users of the forum Liguria In Metal. Shut rhythmics, changes of time, scream and growl alternate vocals: a mix of power and aggressiveness that it doesn't have anything to envy to the great Italian and foreign names.
Today they are ready to introduce what surely is their more mature job: Future World. A sinister concept on the unpredictable future that the man he is building with his own hands composed by 5 pieces recorded in direct taking to valorize at the most its pathos and to give him a "live" effect. The all has been realized during the first week of May at "Citta della Musica" in Genova, masterizzed at "Atlantis studio" in Milan. Future World: guitars downtuned, fast and precise riff, effective and involving refrain, power and melody.

"Set To Destruct is a band from the Reading, PA area. Formed in 2007, it went through several phases of before it became what it is today. Incorporating a mix of thrash metal and grindcore riffs with some brutal death metal vocals, they're able to hold their own when it comes to playing heavy music. Set To Destruct is far from a typical metal band, however. None of that serious "fuck your face with Satan's maggots" stuff, they typically write songs about more important matters, like mad scientists who scrap cars and build robots, badass mother-fuckers who drink beer and listen to CCR or when doomsday comes and you're forced into your bomb shelter to smoke thousands of pounds of weed. They released their first self distributed EP in June of 2010, which you can currently buy at any of the shows that they play, up until they manage to scrape enough cash together to put out a full length release."

"During the lengthy period of disbandments and silence, several core members of deceased projects from different disciplines continued to communicate about the general state of heavy music in the local vicinity. Rik (Dr. Satan, Seventh Throne), Maarten (Dr. Satan, Waking The Dead), Psyborg (Der Slachtmacht, Turbo Torture), and RD (Seventh Throne), members of bands with different styles, have all agreed about the abysmal musical state in the area. The common appreciation for old school, no-nonsense, obnoxious, and riff-heavy death metal has lead to a common yearning, rather an obsession, to deliver the same primitive blows to break the painful silence. Obituary, Nominon, Death, Asphyx, Vomitory, Unleashed, and others, are to be thanked for the birth of an inspiring spark. A shared frustration about the lack of proper metal acts, and the fact that a lot of current metal bands seem to have forgotten what the music is all about, only led to further motivation and increasing urge to start another project.
Sometime in 2009, these remnants of former local projects, decided that enough was enough. If they wanted to have things the way they wanted, they're just going to have to get out and do it themselves. Despite their different musical backgrounds, they formed an alliance with the sole purpose of doing their share in bringing back what made death metal great.
Five individuals with an unhealthy obsession with metal, alcohol, and a shared frustration, seemed to be just the right ingredients needed to bring forth a creation that aims to claim its place. A creation with the sole goal of restoring death metal to its former glory. Expect nothing fancy, just a barrage of riffs, and hard pounding beats delivered with shattering intensity. There will be no compromises. The primal rage within us all shall be awakened. Prepare for the return of the primordial form, the restoration of the old ways; the Primal Order."
