Thrash tinged death metal from Portugal. There are interesting dynamics going on within the songs, like on 'The Slaughter' for example, which starts off with a very thrashy riff, and with an explosion of double bass the song propels forward into death metal territory and finally ends on a slower melodic note. Good stuff.

A Month Down A New Road

It has been more than a month that Death Metal Invasion has made a conscious decision to go down a path where few music sharing blogs have dared to tread before. At the risk of alienating a lot of daily visitors looking for free downloads of their favourite death metal acts, DMI decided it was time to get involved more responsibily in the act of cultivating a scene which we love. In these days where people listen to and love a band without owning a single physical CD of the band, something needed to be done to promote the newer acts who are at a disadvantage right off the bat, those who do not have the 'fame factor' to even get hundreds of downloads off mp3 blogs.

There however, are a lot of true death metal fans who care enough about the music to be actively interested in checking new bands out, knowing that a lot of the 'BIG' bands of today struggled through endless demos/promos/EPs/albums before reaching out to a wider audience.

On the other hand, it is true that the internet leads to a glut of new acts who need no more than half-way decent computer recording setups and software in order to record their music, leading to an increasing need of sorting out the chaff from the wheat, or the dirt from the gold if one could say so. DMI realises it needs to take a more active stand in the sorting out process, and while the rating system after each blog post has been giving a fair idea so far, we shall be introducing more measures to make sure you do not miss out on the true gems that the budding scene has to offer to you. I just discovered an article on Death Metal Invasion on Invisible Oranges that has summarised our situation rather succinctly.

We have received a LOT of flak from our ex-visitors for this change, and inspite of the negative reactions and the drop in daily page hits, we have registered an increase in our blog followers from 70 to 76. Not a tremendous increase in the space of a month, but we believe if even one person understands what we're trying to do now, our purpose is served. The rest can always post obscenities in the comments to this post, which shall be duly disregarded by us, since we now KNOW we are doing what we always really wanted to do.

And, at the end, a big thanks to all the bands who contacted us, more than 50 within a month! And also, to everyone on the current DMI Team for being such great guys to work with. Panjo has been a new addition to the team and he has made a big impact already, showing his full support to what we intend to achieve. We will only get stronger henceforth. Cheers.

These guys seem to be heavily influenced by Watchtower and thus this debut full length by them is full of shifting riff patterns, jazz breakdowns and some great drumming courtesy of George Kollias (Nile). On a casual listen it might appear that there is not much happening in the songs but that's only because the songs unfold in a laid back manner instead of going at a frantic pace. The delivery of the music brings Wayd to mind, as they have a similar jazz influenced feel without cramming hundred notes into each second. But when the need arises there are some shredding solos scattered around the album along with lots of melodic leads, again emphasizing on the variation being offered. One negative thing about Spectral Extravagance is the slightly clickety-click plastic sounding double pedal sound. I guess that must have been done on purpose since the drums were recorded at George's own personal studio, but I do prefer the double bass to have some thud. Overall, this album offers 43 mins of really enjoyable progressive/technical death metal and it has been growing on me continuously over the last few days. Highly recommended!

It's promoting bands like Knifed that makes us glad of the new direction DMI has taken. I wasn't expecting much when I decided to check out only the first track, but once it started, I couldn't care to stop till the entire demo played out. Grindcore isn't really my cup of tea, but these guys have succeeded in impressing me with their style. Production, too, is of first-rate quality. You'd be missing a chance to try a great new band if you didn't download this!

This demo contains 4 tracks of aggressive in-your-face death-thrash. If you like stuff like Defleshed then this should be right up your alley. There is a lot happening in the riffs department, and most of it is quite fast! But they also know when to slow down and create some catchy hooks like in 'Walk With The Dead'. Martin van Drunen (Asphyx, Hail of Bullets etc) used to be in this band but left recently in order to focus on Hail of Bullets and Jan from Depravity has taken his place in the vocalist's spot (this demo features Jan on vocals). Very enjoyable stuff, check them out now!

Nableena was founded January 13, 2003. Altough it has been a Metal band since the beginning, Nableena did not persue any specific musical style. As the result of the most different influences, the band's main objective has been an harmonious alliance of several Metal streams with World Music arrangements, through the use of various acoustic instruments and samples integration. Therefore, Nableena's songs are often associated with styles like Death Metal, Doom, Alternative and Swedish Death Metal, incorporating unexpected flavours of Middle East music, boasted by a vocal duet ranging from melancolic singing to raging gutural screaming. In 2006 Nableena won a second position in a regional Metal bands contest. Since that time, it has been present in many important venues, greatly contributing to the widening of the azorean Metal scene. From their myspace: "The band was formed in winter 2008 by two founding members Vedran (Guitar) and Emanuel (drums). Our goal with the band was to create some Old School Death Metal and show to the scene that extreme metal is still breathing in our town. Soon after the birth of Superstition, the band was baptized with blood of a new memeber Vilim (Guitar). We started to rehearse some Morbid Angel and Cannibal Corpse songs, but also focusing on our own material and sound! Few months later after Vilim joined, the line-up of the band was completed with Ivan (Bass) and Elvis (vocals). The band started to rehearse with full line-up, and everything was perfect, so at the beginning of 2009, Superstition entered studio to record first demo called "Mirrors of Suffering". "

Metal Invader's comments: Relentless blastbeats and fast picked tremolo riffing abounds on this demo. Im quite impressed with the drumming and I hope these guys get a chance to make a full length soon, would surely like to check it out.

So here it is, the new full length album of Depravity, who have graciously allowed it to be uploaded in its entirety. Excluding the intro and outro, this contains 9 tracks of thrash-tinged death metal. As mentioned in the description of the promo taken from the same album, the music is midpaced to fast death metal with plenty of catchy riffs thrown in. The main focus here is definitely on creating catchy death metal anthems rather than focusing on speed or brutality. The deep throated growls along with some blackmetal type snarling in the background complement the music perfectly and some well placed double pedal pummeling propels the songs forward at key moments. My favourite songs have to be 'On Blood Drenched Oceans of Sand' for its majestic atmosphere, 'Maelstrom Misanthropy' for making me air-guitar like crazy and 'Burning Pit of Isolation' for a bucketful load of great riffs. Also included in the package is a high quality video of 'Maelstrom Misanthropy', making this an absolute must-download.

It took me more than a few listens to fully comprehend all that is happening in this 4 song EP. Linear song structures are obviously not favoured by Face of Ruin and these songs are chock full of riff changes, interesting drum patterns and versatile bass lines. I could detect an Atheist influence in the way little melodic leads propped out of nowhere in songs like ‘Bound Driven To The Altar’. Fans of technical death metal must definitely check this out.

Coffinworm’s myspace has a single line description of the band: ‘the arms of chaos grinding you into dust’. And quite true that is. Coffinworm create a crushing wall of death-doom, with thick sludgy riffs swirling around distorted feedback. A foreboding atmosphere is present throughout this demo, mixed with short plucked string interludes. If you like stuff like Eyehategod then chances are you will dig this a lot.

Being into death metal for the last 18 years I have to admit I have a special fondness for bands which still play old school style death metal, and this fondness is magnified when the band in question has been formed relatively recently. The magnified fondness is further elevated when I come to know the band’s origin is from an uncommon country such an Iceland. The only other band I’m familiar with from Iceland is Severed Crotch (whom I love) but Gone Postal play a different style. Rather than being very technical, they remind me more of stuff like Blood Red Throne. This album was released in 2008 but as it’s sold out now, the band is making it available online so that more people can listen to it. And more people definitely need to listen to this solid output of death metal!

A strong effort for a debut album and no doubt they are talented enough to make a big name for themselves in the future. By the way, the band shares 2 members with Abhordium (featured here earlier) and both these bands should be checked out!

The music concists of midpaced to fast death metal with some very catchy riffs which have quite a middle-eastern feel at times. In fact the second song starts off with a very Nile-like intro before charging headfirst into a barrage of crunchy riffs. The songwriting skills on display here are definitely impressive with every song having memorable moments which make you want to listen to them again and again. Also of note is the awesome sound, the guitars sound heavy without losing the crunch. Highly Recommended!

Quite an international split we have here. 'Grindcore Bullshit' was released last February through a Malaysian label called "Deathmutt records". It contains previously released demo or promo tracks from the 4 bands. I didnt really know what to expect from a band called Tsubo, but the carnage they unleashed was a mighty pleasant surprise. A thick meaty death-grind machine they are. RxVx69 were much rawer and ATXXX were loud, fast and fielding quite a noisy guitar tone. Discolony continued the grind assault with some cool old school grindcore.

Hideous Divinity - Sinful Star Necrolatry [demo] (2007)

HIDEOUS DIVINITY is the new band of former guitarist and founding member of HOUR OF PENANCE (Enrico, all guitars, bass and music). This is their first and only release, a 2-track demo recorded in the infamous 16th Cellar Studios by Stefano Saul Morabito. The session line-up is completed by Mauro (drums, HOUR OF PENANCE) and Synder (vocals, EYECONOCLAST).
Enrico has since moved back to Italy from Norway and rejoined HOUR OF PENANCE as rhythm guitarist, though there has been no announcement if or how this will affect the activity of HIDEOUS DIVINITY.
